?My name is Andrea Flores and I am originally from Monterrey, Mexico. I graduated in May 2011 from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (specialization in Finance). I am planning to continue my professional career in the areas of business development, strategy, or consulting.
My primary reason for choosing to do a Master right after graduation was the increasing competitive environment in the job market. I knew that obtaining a Master at a young age would definitely add professional value and would open many doors in the business world. Since my specializations in my undergrad studies were focused on Finance and Economics I knew that a Master in International Management would provide a broader perspective about all areas of a business.
My story with IE was a combination of fate and good-decision making. In the summer of 2010 I had the opportunity to obtain an internship at a bank in Madrid. I fell in love with the city and I was already thinking about grad school options by then. I knew IE was located in Madrid and I decided to see with my own eyes all the good things I heard about the school. I visited before going back home and I completely fell in love with the campus and the atmosphere. I also visited other Business Schools in the United States but none of them could compare to the welcoming experience at IE and the excitement of Madrid?s daily lifestyle.
I decided to specialize in International Business. I would highly recommend it because it is composed?of courses that provide a broad understanding on how businesses (either small or large) should approach global strategies in order to be successful in vast dynamic markets. Also, professors are very knowledgeable and the topics are generally very up to date so it makes class discussions very interesting and meaningful to today?s situation. My two favorite courses of my specialization period were Capital Markets and Country Analysis, therefore, if these topics sound appealing then International Business should be the right choice.
The IE experience is unique and completely exciting! Besides the quality of the academics, there are two main things I would always remember as the most valuable to me. First, diversity; the amount of nationalities and backgrounds that IE brings together still amazes me. I never expected to form a group of friends composed of people from Spain, Kuwait, Lebanon, Germany, Austria, Italy, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Portugal, India, Serbia, Netherlands, Brazil, Colombia, and many other countries. Second, the experience of teamwork at IE is excellent; it becomes a very important preparation for situations most business leaders will experience in their professional lives.
I don?t regret a single thing that I have experienced and/or achieved at IE; but my biggest advice is to really focus on time management, because at IE time flies! Take advantage of every second. Join clubs to attend their conferences and activities, get to know the city, travel, socialize, and learn from every person in the IE community. This issue became my biggest difficulty while at IE because there is so much going on at the same time ? sleeping is a luxury. The best thing to do regarding time management is to set up your priorities from the beginning and to later define your interests. I believe this is the best way to take advantage of all that IE has to offer!
Right now I am going through my specialization period, which is the last stage of the MIM. I am currently searching for job opportunities and I believe that I am a different person compared to when I arrived to Madrid. I have clearer goals and I now know which areas of business I want to go into. Just to give an example; IE has trained me a lot in terms of how to manage interviews and the overall job search process. In terms of academics I have a deeper knowledge of finance, operations, and especially strategy which are areas I didn?t have the chance to develop in my undergraduate studies.?
