Robert Mapplethorpe is one of the most controductory artist regarding his evaluation in the US. One of his exhibition tour was banned from several museums and certain changes has been made in US? art founding policy after this scandal.

According To Ludwig Museum: ?Robert Mapplethorpe is by all means one of the most important artists of 20th century photography and also a key figure in the history of the genre. Besides his own social surroundings he took his inspiration from antique and renaissance sculpture for his characteristically toned black and white photos, which mostly depict celebrities, portraits of men and women, nudes, sexual situations including S&M practices or artistic still-lives with flowers. ?
