Olympics network problems point to issues, opportunities as mobile ...

Twitter iPhone app

High volume of tweets contributes to network problems

Mobile users love of tweeting during live events has become a problem for wireless carriers trying to meet network coverage demands as use swells during events such as the Olympic Games. However, the high volume of mobile communications also points to significant opportunities for official sponsors such as Coca-Cola to be seen.

In a sign of the growing use of mobile during live events and the problems wireless networks are having keeping up with the demand the International Olympics Commission reported problems over the weekend with broadcasting certain events thanks to the large number of text messages, tweets and other communications via mobile phones. While high social media traffic is no surprise, the problems reported at the Olympics Games suggest the infrastructure is not keeping up with the growth in demand.

The speed of growth and widespread adoption of social tools likely outpaced the planning and infrastructure needed, said David Hewitt, Atlanta-based global mobile practice lead for SapientNitro.

Overall, meeting network coverage demands spawned by social media-induced mobile traffic is not special to the Olympics, London, or O2 for that matter, he said. In comparison, the United Statescontinues to have challenges at many of its larger sporting events even the ones sponsored by wireless operators.

Meeting consumer demand for wireless coverage at peak inspiring moments is no trivial task and will continue to be a sore spot with sports fans for quite some time.

Brands benefit
The problems occurred over the weekend, when commentators for the broadcast of the mens road cycling race were unable to get necessary information because of issues with the GPS system communication network. According to reports, the issue is with one of Britains wireless carriers, which did not have dedicated data networks for the sports data being broadcasted and the fan-based social media.

As a result of the problems, the IOC has asked spectators to avoid sending large numbers of text messages, tweets and other communications via mobile and to send communications by other means when possible.

The strong use of mobile social media at the Olympics could be good news for the many brands that have invested heavily in being Olympics Games sponsors and to have related marketing activity. Coca-Cola, British Airways and Adidas are just a few of the brands that are taking advantage of both mobile and social to tap into the excitement around the Olympics.

The official London 2012 Olympics apps.

Brands benefit when theyre mentioned, or seen, said Marc Poirier, co-founder and chief marketing officer of Acquisio, Brossard, Canada.

With the right positioning, an ad posted at the finish line or other placement could show up in, potentially, thousands of images being shared around the world via social media outlets, he said.

In addition to displaying ads to those present and those watching on TV, brands now have an additional opportunity to be seen all over the Internet via social media photo sharing, improving their visibility massively.

Growth will continue
Consumers use of mobile to engage in social media, watch and share videos and otherwise consume content is growing by leaps and bounds. The volume is up significantly since the last Olympics Games and while organizers said they were prepared, the issues this weekend in London point to the need for better mobile support.

A recent Live Nation study found that approximately 40 percent of consumers at concert events share their experience on Facebook while roughly 10 percent of consumers use Twitter to share a live event experience. Seventy-five percent of users take photos and 63 percent text during a live event (see story).

We can probably find a few different entities to blame for this, but what this should really come down to is a lesson in what we can expect from the future, Mr. Poirier said.

Since the last Olympics four years ago there has been explosive growth in the number of individuals using smartphones up 456 percent ? and other mobile devices to connect to social media outlets, but the reality is that networks are not built for this kind of constant and consistent load, he said.

The Olympic organizers will have to be better prepared for their own contingencies to ensure their equipment can function properly next time, as theres sure to be even more growth by then.

BUKULMEZ, Turkey (AP) ? Smoking a cigarette outside a Turkish hospital near the Syrian border, a man in a gray gown and flip-flops held his sleeping 2-year-old daughter, Aya. On Aya's right eye was a bandage. In her left hand was a chocolate bar.

Aya lost her eye when she was struck by shrapnel from a shell that also killed her 8-month-old brother, Mohammad, and their mother. The father and daughter were among some 200,000 people who the U.N. said late Sunday have fled Syria's largest city, Aleppo, during days of clashes between rebels and the military.

Aleppo residents, some severely wounded, are packing up belongings and loading them onto cars, trucks and even motorcycles to seek temporary shelter in rural villages and schools outside the city and dusty tents across the border in Turkey.

In interviews with The Associated Press, refugees described a city besieged by government troops and beset by incessant shelling. Food supplies and gasoline are running low and black market prices for everyday staples are soaring.

As the violence intensified, the country's most senior diplomat in London defected. Charge d'affaires Khaled al-Ayoubi is the latest in a string of high-profile diplomats to abandon President Bashar Assad's regime over a crackdown that, according to rights activists, has killed more than 19,000 people since March 2011.

The battle for Aleppo, a city of 3 million that was once a bastion of support for Assad, is critical for both the regime and the opposition. Its fall would give the opposition a major strategic victory with a stronghold in the north. A rebel defeat, at the very least, would buy Assad more time.

Activists said regime forces were shelling rebel-held districts of the city and a cluster of surrounding villages relentlessly on Monday, sending entire families and panicked residents fleeing. Many went to Turkey, some 30 miles (50 kilometers) away, where tens of thousands of Syrians have already found refuge during the uprising.

Reem, a woman in her 30s who fled Aleppo's rebel-held district of Saif al-Dawleh, was among those who showed up in Turkey on Monday.

"The situation in Aleppo is dreadful," she told the AP soon after arriving at the Bukulmez illegal border crossing, where she was greeted by Turkish soldiers.

"Had it been merely bearable I wouldn't have left my home," she said.

Wearing a black head scarf and black robe and sandals, Reem described hiding for three days in a room near the entrance of the building in which she lived. She then fled to a village near the Turkish border before crossing over on Monday.

"I blame the regime for everything. People in the city used to go out and protest peacefully, but they just shot at them," said Reem, who would not give her last name.

Turkish troops ordered an AP team to leave shortly after journalists began interviewing refugees at the border crossing Monday.

Outside the state-run hospital, Aya's father recounted how his family's tragedy unfolded.

"I was at work when I received the call that a shell had hit my house," he said. "As soon as I returned, I found my wife and son dead on the floor. Part of my son's skull was blown off, and Aya was wounded."

"The whole city is destroyed," said Aya's father, who would not give his name but said that he was from the rebel-held district of Bustan al-Qasr.

The U.N. said 200,000 Syrians have left Aleppo over the past 10 days as the government trains its mortars, tanks and helicopter gunships on the neighborhoods seized by the rebels.

"I am extremely concerned by the impact of shelling and use of tanks and other heavy weapons on people in Aleppo," Valerie Amos, the top U.N. official for humanitarian affairs, said in a statement late Sunday. "Many people have sought temporary shelter in schools and other public buildings in safer areas," she added. "They urgently need food, mattresses and blankets, hygiene supplies and drinking water."

"It is not known how many people remain trapped in places where fighting continues today," she warned.

In online videos, people can be seen scurrying through streets against a backdrop of gunfire and climbing onto any form of transportation available to escape, including trucks, cars and even heavily laden motorcycles.

The authenticity of the videos could not be independently verified.

"Dozens of families are packing their belongings and leaving in cars and trucks," said an activist in a village near Aleppo, who declined to give his name for security reasons. "They are taking only light possessions that they can carry, like a few clothes, some valuables and that's it."

"I saw cars with eight, nine people packed in them fleeing the bombing," he added. He said rebels had seized a nearby checkpoint early Monday and captured several tanks. The regime responded by shelling the rural area just northwest of the city. "Entire families are leaving."

Videos of the attack on the checkpoint in Andan posted on the Internet show fierce exchanges of fire in the early morning and then later, victorious rebels hauling out boxes of ammunition and taking heavy machine guns for the fight in Aleppo.

Among those wounded in Aleppo province on Monday was Al-Jazeera correspondent Omar Khashram, who was hurt by shrapnel after a mortar round fell near his car, a colleague said.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry defended its offensive in Aleppo province, saying it was meant to protect innocent people.

In two letters addressed to the head of the U.N. Security Council and the U.N. Secretary General, Syria said that "armed terrorist groups" backed openly with funds and weapons by Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey have committed "horrifying crimes" against innocent civilians. It accused the rebels of using residents as human shields.

Syrian state media reported the army had "purged" Aleppo's southwestern neighborhood of Salaheddine and inflicted "great losses" upon the rebels in one of the first districts they took control of in their bid to seize the city.

Activists, however, disputed these claims. The assault has knocked down power lines, and the neighborhood has been without electricity since the morning.

President Barack Obama and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke by telephone on Monday and agreed to "coordinate efforts to assist the growing numbers of displaced Syrians, not only within Syria, but in Turkey and the broader region," according to a White House statement.

The Turkish state-run Anadolu agency reported Monday that Turkey is deploying more troops to the border, sending tanks, armored combat vehicles, more missile launchers and infantry troops.

In addition to Turkey, the violence in Syria has sent refugees flooding into Jordan, Iraq and Lebanon. Greece has responded by quadrupling the number of guards on its borders with Turkey out of fear of a potential influx of Syrian refugees.

Al-Ayoubi, the Syrian diplomat in London, is the fourth high-ranking envoy to defect. He was preceded by the charge d'affaires in Cyprus, her husband, a diplomat in the UAE, and by the ambassador to Iraq.

A Foreign Office spokesman said al-Ayoubi was staying in a safe location in the United Kingdom and was in contact with British officials. His departure leaves five staff at the embassy and there has been no indication that they would be leaving their posts as well.

Turkey also reported that the deputy head of security for Syria's Latakia region, a regime stronghold, had defected as well.

The brigadier general was among a group of 12 Syrian officers who crossed into Turkey late Sunday, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters. His defection raised to 28 the number of generals who have left for Turkey since the start of the 17-month-old uprising.

How To Use a Testamentary Trust | Robert J. Kulas, P.A. Attorneys at ...

Jul 30, 2012 ?/? By: Robert J. Kulas, Estate Planning Attorney ?/? Category: Trust Administration

A testamentary trust is often a useful estate planning device, especially for parents who have young children. Though creating the trust is not especially difficult, you will need to answer several key questions and ensure that your testamentary trust is adequately prepared. Here are three tips that will help you get started in the right direction.

Tip 1. Select the people involved

A testamentary trust gets created through your Last Will and Testament and only takes effect once you die. Like other trusts, you select the property that goes into the trust and who gets to use it. The people who get to use the trust are usually your minor children, known as the beneficiaries. However, you?ll also need to select someone who will be willing to manage the property on behalf of the beneficiaries, known as the trustee. You can also select alternate trustees in case your first choice is unable or unwilling to serve.

Tip 2: Choose the limitations

Unlike direct inheritances, testamentary trusts allow you to place limits on how the trust property is used. It?s very common, for example, for testamentary trusts to dictate that children will inherit part of the trust property at certain ages. For example, you can direct that the children receive one third of the trust property once they reach the age of 18, 25, and 30. Or, you can direct that the children do not receive the trust property until they graduate college.

Tip 3: Formalize your choices

Once you?ve made your decisions about the testamentary trust it?s important to speak your estate planning lawyer so you can be sure your trust is adequately created. You will need to include the terms in your Will and make sure the will complies with all state laws.

HBT: Lee's chances of going to Texas 'less than 1 percent'

T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com is pumping the breaks on the Cliff Lee-to-the-Rangers talk, reporting that the odds of Philadelphia trading the left-hander to Texas are ?less than one percent.?

Sullivan cites an unnamed ?industry source? for that assessment, but generally speaking he?s very plugged into the Rangers.

This morning rumors started swirling that the Phillies were making Lee available in trade talks to free themselves of the $87.5 million he?s owed for the next three seasons.

Mitt Romney in Israel: Oops! He did it again

On what aides had labeled a ?listen and learn? foreign tour, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has been doing an awful lot of talking.

Not only did he inflame Palestinian sentiment by suggesting that their culture was responsible for their economic distress, he gave tacit encouragement for an Israeli strike on Iran and recognized Jerusalem as the country?s capital, despite a careful US policy of maintaining its major presence in Tel Aviv.

Not bad for two days.

After a sojourn in Britain that saw him widely reviled for injudicious comments about the readiness of London to host the Olympics, one would have thought that Romney?s aides would have kept him on a very short leash. But short of muzzling the presumptive nominee altogether, it seems that little can be done to keep him from stepping in one mess after another.

More from GlobalPost: Mitt the Twitt: A 'disconcerting trip'

Israel gave Romney a warm welcome, perhaps underscoring resentment of President Barack Obama?s decision not to visit the country during his first term. While Obama has pledged solid aid to Israel, he has also made outreach to Muslim countries a centerpiece of his foreign policy. One of his first major speeches as president was in Cairo, where he heralded a ?new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world? based upon mutual interest and mutual respect.?

Seated at a fundraiser breakfast beside billionaire Las Vegas casino mogul Sheldon Adelson, who has pledged millions to the Romney campaign, the candidate enthused over the vibrancy of the economy in Jerusalem.

"And as I come here and I look out over this city and consider the accomplishments of the people of this nation, I recognize the power of at least culture and a few other things," he said. He also allowed that the "hand of providence" may have contributed to Israel?s economic dominance in the region.

His remarks irritated the Palestinians, who immediately responded.

"It is a racist statement, and this man doesn't realize that the Palestinian economy cannot reach its potential because there is an Israeli occupation," said Saeb Erekat, a senior aide to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

The issue of Jerusalem is also a delicate one; the city is a major symbol for Jews, Christians, and Muslims, and is claimed to some extent by all. The international community does not recognize Jerusalem as the Israeli capital ? except for Mitt Romney, that is.

?It is a deeply moving experience to be in Jerusalem, the capital of Israel," he said, opening a speech in the Holy City.

More from GlobalPost: Campaign 2012: Status quo you can believe in

Romney also had to spend some time walking back comments made by his foreign policy advisor, Dan Senor, who said that Romney would back unilateral Israeli action to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

"If Israel has to take action on its own, in order to stop Iran from developing that capability the governor would respect that decision," Senor told reporters.

Romney himself used softer language, but said essentially the same thing.

"I recognize the right of Israel to defend itself,? he told ABC News. ?At the same time as two nations we are both committed to employing every means we have to keep Iran from pursuing nuclear following."

Romney refused to rule out military options to accomplish this goal.

Romney had stated publicly that he would refrain from criticizing the president during this trip, and that he was not going to make any new foreign policy.

But he cannot seem to help himself. His remarks, which were warmly greeted by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, were also a slap at his opponent. Obama has tried to tamp down ?loose talk of war? as he has called Romney?s saber rattling on Iran; in Israel, Romney hit back:

?It is sometimes said that those who are the most committed to stopping the Iranian regime from securing nuclear weapons are reckless and provocative and inviting war," Romney said. "The opposite is true. We are the true peacemakers."

More from GlobalPost: Obama's stealth visit to Seattle

Romney went to Israel to shore up his reputation as a friend of Israel, hoping to boost his support among American Jewish voters as well as Evangelical Christians.

It is too soon to tell whether his trip will help him more than it hurts him. The race is a dead heat, and shows no signs of breaking any time soon. The latest Gallup poll has Romney and Obama neck and neck, each with 46 percent of the national vote.

Little has changed over the past several weeks, despite numerous attack ads, strenuous campaigning and aggressive ?messaging? by both sides.

Romney is now in Poland, where he is meeting with Lech Walesa, the labor union leader who wet on to become the president of Poland.

So far, at least, he seems not to have offended anybody. But stay tuned.

In Obama era, have race relations improved?

PHILADELPHIA ? Ask Americans how race relations have changed under their first black president and they are ready with answers.

Ashley Ray, a white woman, hears more people debating racial issues. ?I know a lot of people who really thought we were OK as a nation, a culture, and now they understand that we?re not,? she says.

Karl Douglass, a black man, sees stereotypes easing. ?White people deal with me and my family differently,? he says.

Jose Lozano, who is Hispanic by way of Puerto Rico, believes prejudice is emerging from the shadows. ?Now the racism is coming out,? he says.

In the afterglow of Barack Obama?s historic victory, most people in the United States believed that race relations would improve. Nearly four years later, has that dream come true? Americans have no shortage of thoughtful opinions, and no consensus.

As the nation moves toward the multiracial future heralded by this son of an African father and white mother, the events of Obama?s first term, and what people make of them, help trace the racial arc of his presidency.

Shortly before the 2008 election, 56 percent of Americans surveyed by the Gallup organization said that race relations would improve if Obama were elected. One day after his victory, 70 percent said race relations would improve and only 10 percent predicted they would get worse.

Just weeks after taking office, Obama said, ?There was justifiable pride on the part of the country that we had taken a step to move us beyond some of the searing legacies of racial discrimination.?

Then he joked, ?But that lasted about a day.?

Or, rather, three months. Continued...

By July 2009, the black Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates was arrested for yelling at a white police officer who questioned whether Gates had broken into his own home. Asked to comment, Obama said he didn?t know all the facts, but Gates was a personal friend and the officer had acted ?stupidly.?

The uproar was immediate. Obama acknowledged afterward, ?I could?ve calibrated those words differently.?

Ed Cattaneo, a retired computer training manager from Cape May, N.J., points to that episode as evidence of how Obama has hurt race relations.

?He?s made them terrible,? says Cattaneo, who is white. He also sees Obama as siding against white people through actions such as his Justice Department?s decision to drop voter intimidation charges against New Black Panthers and in a program to turn out the black vote called ?African-Americans for Obama.?

Larry Sharkey, also white, draws different conclusions from the past four years.

?Attitudes are much better,? Sharkey says as he slices raw meat in a Philadelphia butcher shop. He remembers welcoming a black family that moved next door to him 20 years ago in Claymont, Del. A white neighbor advised him not to associate with the new arrivals, warning, ?Your property values are going to go down.?

That kind of thing would never happen today, Sharkey says.

As Obama dealt with fallout from the Gates affair during the summer of 2009, the tea party coalesced out of opposition to Obama?s stimulus and health care proposals. The vast majority of tea partyers were white. A small number of them displayed racist signs or were connected to white supremacist groups, prompting the question: Are Obama?s opponents motivated by dislike of the president?s policies, his race ? or both?

As that debate grew, Obama retreated to the race-neutral stance that has been a hallmark of his career. An October 2009 Gallup poll showed a large drop? Beven Chen, an Asian-American graduate student in Philadelphia, points to racial rhetoric he has heard directed toward Obama, in person and online, as proof that race relations have deteriorated.?

He also has observed a more visible sign of division: fewer Obama T-shirts. Continued...

?When he was elected, it was an American thing. People of all races wore them,? says Chen. ?Today it?s a distinctly black phenomenon.?

Ray, a graduate school administrator from Chicago, is uncertain whether race relations have remained the same or gotten worse.

It?s good that people are talking about race more, she says, ?but I know quite a few people who are sick of those discussions and blame him for all of it.?

In the summer of 2010, race and politics collided again when Arizona Republicans passed an immigration law that critics said would lead to racial profiling of Hispanics.

Lozano, the police sergeant, remembers that when Obama visited Arizona and met with the governor, who supported the law, she wagged an angry finger in the president?s face.

?That was ugly, I?ve never seen anything like that,? says Lozano, who also is vice president of the Massachusetts Association of Minority Law Enforcement Officers. ?There?s no way that would have ever happened to a white president.?

By the fall of 2010, Republicans had triumphed in the midterm elections and made history by electing Hispanic and Indian-American governors in New Mexico, South Carolina, and Nevada. Two black Republicans also went to Congress, from South Carolina and Florida.

Less than a year later, an August 2011 Gallup poll showed a further decline in racial optimism: 35 percent said race relations had improved due to Obama?s election, 41 percent said no change, and 23 percent said things were worse.

Around this time, some African-American lawmakers and pundits openly complained about the president?s refusal to specifically target any programs at high black unemployment. An interviewer from Black Entertainment Television asked Obama why not.

?That?s not how America works,? Obama replied. Continued...

Then came this February?s killing of unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin by neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman, whose father is white and mother is from Peru. Authorities initially declined to charge Zimmerman with a crime, causing a polarizing uproar.

This time, when asked about the case, Obama delivered a carefully calibrated message. He said all the facts were not known, the legal system should take its course ? and that ?if I had a son, he would look like Trayvon.?

The comment was factual, but it still strikes Cattaneo as a coded message to black people that Obama is on their side. ?A lot of people I talk to can?t understand why a man who?s half-white and half-black is so anti-white.?

This April, in a poll by the National Journal and the University of Phoenix, 33 percent felt race relations were getting better, 23 percent said they were getting worse, and 42 percent said they were staying about the same.

So where are we now?

Four years after Obama smashed the nation?s highest racial barrier, and less than four months before America will decide whether he deserves a second term, the nation is uncertain about the meaning of a black president.

Recently, Obama was asked in a Rolling Stone magazine interview if race relations were any different than when he took office.

?I never bought into the notion,? Obama said, ?that by electing me, somehow we were entering into a postracial period.?

NASA rover closing in on Mars to hunt for life clues

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) - NASA's Mars rover was on its final approach to the red planet on Sunday, heading toward a mountain that may hold clues about whether life has ever existed on Mars, officials said.

The rover, also known as Curiosity, has been careening toward Mars since its launch in November. The nuclear-powered rover the size of a compact car is expected to end its 352-million-mile (567-million-km) journey on August 6 at 1:31 a.m. EDT.

The landing zone is a 12-mile-by-4-mile (20-km-by-7-km) area inside an ancient impact basin known as Gale Crater, located near the planet's equator. The crater, one of the lowest places on Mars, has a 3-mile-high (5-km-high) mountain of what appears to be layers of sediment.

Scientists suspect the crater may have once been the floor of a lake.

If so, they believe that sediments likely filled the crater, but were carried away over time, leaving only the central mound.

Readying to travel the last stretch to its landing site, Curiosity fired its steering thrusters for six seconds early Sunday, tweaking its flight path by 0.4 inches (1 centimeter) per second.

"I will not be surprised if this was our last trajectory correction maneuver," chief navigator Tomas Martin-Mur, with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, said in a statement.

Curiosity is expected to hit the top of the Martian atmosphere at 1:24 a.m. EDT on August 6. If all goes as planned, seven minutes later the rover will be standing on its six wheels on the dry, dusty surface of Mars.

Landing is by no means guaranteed. To transport the one-ton rover and position it near the mound, engineers devised a complicated system that includes a 52-foot (16-metre) diameter supersonic parachute, a rocket-powered aerial platform and a so-called "sky crane" designed to lower the rover on a tether to the ground.

NASA last week successfully repositioned its Mars-orbiting Odyssey spacecraft so that it would be able to monitor Curiosity's descent and landing and radio the information back to ground controllers in as close to real time as possible.

Earth and Mars are so far apart that radio signals, which travel at the speed of light, take 13.8 minutes for a one-way journey.

HSBC says sorry as it takes $700 million hit

LONDON (AP) ? HSBC PLC apologized to shareholders Monday as it disclosed a $700 million charge to cover the cost of U.S. penalties for lapses including its failure to enforce money-laundering controls in Mexico.

The provision was announced as Europe's biggest bank reported an 11 percent advance in pretax profit in the first half of the year following $4.3 billion in gains from asset sales. For the six months ending June 30, the bank made a pretax profit of $12.7 billion, up from $11.5 billion a year earlier.

As well as costs relating to infractions in Mexico, the $700 million provision also takes in possible penalties for violations of the U.S. Bank Secrecy Act in a case going back two years, and any penalties from continuing investigations of possible violations of economic sanctions against Iran and other countries.

Earlier this month, HSBC paid a fine of $28 million ? 379 million Mexican pesos ? to Mexican authorities for non-compliance with money laundering controls.

A U.S. Senate investigative committee reported that in 2007 and 2008 HSBC Mexico sent to the United States about $7 billion in cash. "Bulk cash shipments could reach that volume only if they included illegal drug proceeds," the committee concluded.

HSBC Mexico acknowledged in a statement that it failed to report 39 suspicious transactions and had been late in reporting 1,729 others.

The bank's chairman, Douglas Flint, and Chief Executive Stuart Gulliver apologized for the money-laundering infractions.

"We must demonstrate that we have learned from earlier mistakes," Flint said.

"The banking industry is operating in a hostile climate so we must double our efforts to convince our regulators, customers and investors that we are striving for the highest possible standards. Only that way can we allay public fears and regain trust in our industry," Flint said.

Gulliver said new processes and standards were being enforced in all of the bank's global operations.

"HSBC is now run and managed as a genuinely global firm, making it easier to set, monitor and enforce standards," he said.

As well as being dented by the money-laundering provisions, HSBC's first-half earnings were also hit by provisions of $1.3 billion for compensating U.K. customers for payment protection insurance.

However, the bank made no provision for settling potential regulatory fines and private lawsuits, including one pending in the United States, related to setting the London interbank offered rate (LIBOR) and other indexes.

In its program of getting out of non-strategic markets and non-core investments, HSBC has made 36 disposals and closures since early 2011.

A further look at the figures showed that operating income was up 3 percent to $43.7 billion while taxes paid more than doubled from $1.7 billion to $3.6 billion. However, net profit was down 8.6 percent to $8.4 billion, compared to $9.8 billion a year earlier.

HSBC shares were up 0.8 percent at 535.2 pence in late morning trading in London.

Although the first half profits fell short of analysts' forecasts, Jonathan Jackson at Killik & Co. said he rates the shares as a buy because HSBC has a "strong funding position, with excess cheap deposits, and is well capitalized."

The Challenge of Healthy Eating ? The What's for Lunch Project

You can lose up to 6 pounds in two weeks?without exercising.

That?s the claim made by Kellogg?s Special K Challenge, anyway, which asserts
that replacing two meals per day with Special K products helps consumers can result
shedding up to six pounds in the short span of two weeks. Special K?s meal replacement
options are vast?and their touted benefits are enticing. There are ten varieties of
breakfast cereals, snack bars, granola bars, and meal bars, protein shakes, protein water,
and even crackers and chips, all the designed to be low in calories and high in diet-
payoff.

And with product flavors like ?Chocolatey Delight,? ?Raspberry Cheesecake,?
and ?Brown Sugar Cinnamon,? the Special K Challenge seems like a pretty sweet deal.

But before you dig into that first spoonful of cereal, take a moment to consider the costs
of a low-calorie diet based on highly-processed foods. Consider that there?s more to lose
on the Special K diet than just six pounds.

For evidence, start with the most important meal of the day?and compare Special K?s
Fruit and Yogurt cereal to Post?s ubiquitous morning staple, Shredded Wheat.

With a half cup of skim milk added, a serving of Special K Fruit and Yogurt weighs in
at 160 calories, with 10 grams of sugar, 3 grams of fiber, and 2 grams of protein. It also
boasts an ingredients list that?s over 30 items long. Additionally, that ingredients list
includes seven types of sweeteners: sugar, corn syrup, brown sugar syrup, brown sugar,
confectioner?s glaze, honey, and molasses.

A one-cup serving of Shredded Wheat with the same amount of milk has a higher caloric
price tag, at 210. But for those extra calories, breakfasters get 6 grams of both protein and
fiber?and no sugar at all. What?s more? Shredded Wheat has a single ingredient: whole
grain wheat.

Special K?s cereal has less calories?but it?s also nutritionally poorer, with more of the
excess sugar that can contribute to diabetes and less of the satisfying protein and fiber to
fill a hungry stomach. Most Special K products are similarly guilty. The French Vanilla
protein shake packs 18 grams of sugar (nearly as much at a pack of Reese?s peanut butter
cups) and the Chocolate Caramel meal bar has 15.

Still, the promise of losing 6 pounds in two weeks coerces many consumers to purchase
and eat the empty, sugary calories provided by the Challenge-approved products.

And if two of your meals each day are bowls of cereal at only 160 calories each, losing
weight is almost an inevitability. But the Special K Challenge comes at a cost. In order
to achieve the average participant?s weight loss of 4.8 pounds, those who partake in the

Challenge sacrifice adequate nutrition from whole foods.

But it seems many Americans?especially those concerned with weight?believe that the
number of calories is the only nutrition statistic that matters.

This is the attitude behind the Speical K Challenge. It?s the attitude behind brands like
Lean Cuisine, and diet programs made entirely of frozen, processed food, like Jenny
Craig. And this attitude will not cure or counter the epidemics of obesity and diabetes in
this country.

Even worse, this attitude has already trickled into the regulation of products sold in
public school lunches. Many states have prohibited the sale of soda in cafeterias. But if
they?re only replaced by diet drinks with unnatural, artificial sweeteners, has the selection
really improved? Replacing soda with diet drinks is not a solution. Simply lowering
calories cannot be a solution.

Americans? relationship with food, with obesity, and with diabetes will change?only
if both consumers and manufacturers start to value caloric quality over caloric quantity.
Our nation will become healthier only if we Challenge ourselves eat better, instead of just
eating less.

Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery

Depending on what task you ask it to perform, Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery Pro Edition does either an impressively stellar or a woefully earthbound job of bringing lost files back to life like the phoenix in its name. It has plenty of interface glitches, and it was unable to perform some tasks that OnTrack Easy Recovery Professional ($149.99, 4 stars) performed easily, but it was also able to perform some recovery tasks even more smoothly than OnTrack's offering. When you need to recover lost data, you don't need to pay for the software until after it scans your disk to test whether it can retrieve your files. If it displays your lost files in its preview screen, it can almost certainly recover them, and you can then pay for the program online to enable the program's recovery features.

Starting With Stellar
When you start up Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery, it offers a simple menu with three options, Drive Recovery, CD Recovery, and Photo Recovery. The Drive Recovery option is the most powerful, and leads to a full range of recovery methods. You first select the drive where you want to recover data, then choose among four methods: Quick Recovery, Deleted Recovery, Advanced Recovery, and Raw Recovery. The first method takes only a few seconds to scan a drive, the rest take longer. Raw Recovery can take as long as an hour to scan a very large disk. In my tests on an NTFS-formatted hard disk, the Quick Recovery method was enough to recover the deleted files I was looking for, but a disk with a scrambled directory structure would have required the Advanced or Raw methods.

As with rival products, I tested Stellar Phoenix with deleted documents on my hard disk and with a USB key that I had formatted to use as an emergency boot disk but which?before I formatted it?I had used to store backup copies of music files. In each case the program scanned the drive and displayed tree-structured lists of possibly-recoverable files.

Some Expertise Required
Like rival products, Stellar Phoenix requires you to know what you're doing when choosing files from these lists. For example, I searched for a deleted Word file named "Two Broadcasts.docx." The program listed a deleted file named "~$o Broadcasts.docx" but that wasn't the file I wanted?instead, as the file list showed me, it was a 162-byte file probably left behind by Word when I last edited the file. The file I actually wanted to recover was named "$RC9HQRN.docx," as I discovered by highlighting it in the program's list and looking at its content in the program's built-in previewer?an invaluable feature that OnTrack Easy Recovery Professional and Recuva both lack. In both those other programs, I had to save each deleted file to a disk and then open it in Word to see if it was the file I was looking for.

I had a harder time recovering MP3 files from a USB stick that I had reformatted, with the effect that none of the MP3 files were visible in Windows Explorer and apparently did not exist. OnTrack Easy Recovery Professional took ten minutes to scan my 8GB USB stick and let me recover hundreds of MP3 files to a different drive. OnTrack even displayed each file by its original name and let me open it in my default music-player software to make sure it was the file I wanted. In contrast, Stellar Phoenix took almost four hours to scan the same disk, and then listed nine music files as recoverable. Unfortunately, when I recovered those files and tried to listen to them, they all turned out to be corrupt and unplayable. Recuva also couldn't recover any music files from my USB stick, but at least it didn't claim to recover them.

Feature Light
But this doesn't mean that Stellar Phoenix might be the program you choose for recovering files from the NTFS disk in your computer. Stellar Phoenix includes a feature that lets you save recovered files to an FTP server instead of to a local disk. Unfortunately, most modern FTP servers use Secure FTP instead of the traditional FTP supported by Stellar Phoenix, so this feature may have only limited use in the real world. The program does include some other advanced features that match similar features in OnTrack Easy Recovery Professional, for example a feature that creates a full image of a drive you can try to restore data from the cloned copy?a feature that comes in handy if the drive is getting physically flaky and might not be accessible at all at a later time.

A feature that worked less well was an advanced option that is supposed to show the S.M.A.R.T. status of a disk?what the disk reports about its own health. The program reported that the S.M.A.R.T. feature was disabled on my hard disk, but in fact it isn't disabled, and other utilities showed a full S.M.A.R.T. status report.

All in all, Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery is well worth a try when you're trying to recover lost files from your desktop or laptop and you don't have any recovery software already on hand. Just download the program, let it scan your disk, and pay for it if it can display your lost file in its preview pane. You can't lose, and you can certainly gain. But if you're preparing in advance for possible data disasters, you'll probably prefer OnTrack Easy Recovery Professional.

How to Earn Trust When Distrust Rules

TrustOrganizations have been facing a challenge for several years now: a lack of trust among people regarding what they say, the messages they spread and how they act. Relationships are based upon trust. Although the levels and types of trust are different, this goes for business relationships as well. Trust and reputation go hand in hand and are directly related to the intensity and value of the relationship between a business and its? customers and other partners.

Trust regarding what businesses say and do has been decreasing. It?s one of the reasons why many marketers try to embrace social media and a more conversational style in their customer-oriented tactics.

Trust is fundamental in all sorts of relationships. However, it?s also a very fluffy word, and it shouldn?t be taken too lightly. It is related to honesty and fairness. It is also related to competence in which case it is maybe better to call it confidence.

Anyway, no matter how intangible trust and confidence are, we do know they matter more than ever in business. Faceless and big companies are looked upon with distrust. It?s an evolution that has been going on for years, especially since communication essentially often was company-oriented and more a monologue than a dialogue. Social media enabled people to voice their opinions in very public ways and to have more control over how they interact with businesses regarding the when, where and how and regardless of the reasons why.

This phenomenon contributed to the need of business to be more customer-centric, listen to their customers and move from monologues to dialogues, dropping the ivory tower and faceless mentality. Social media did not cause this; it just speeded up the process. People already were losing trust in ads, corporate messages and businesses in general. Proof: we skip ads on TV because we can, and we increasingly ignore emails, certainly when not personalized, and banners on the Web, a phenomenon called ?banner blindness?. Smart organizations understood this and realized they had to put their customer first and find other ways to provide value and generate more revenue, instead of broadcasting messages, promoting only themselves. Putting the customer at the heart of what we do, also known as customer-centricity, is one of the key fundamentals of social media and business success.

Trust in relationships is not a new topic. For marketers, however, it often seems to be. It?s probably because they undervalue the relational dimension. No, your customer does not want to be your friend. But you do have a relationship with him and trust always matters since relationships and their strength always do.

Trust and personality

The basis of regaining trust in relationships, is obviously having a relationship to start with. And the stronger and more personal it is the more valuable it becomes. Furthermore, people are not isolated but connected and the strength of more ?social? relationships travels fast in a connected reality. The basis of a strong relationship is personality. People see a brand and business as a whole but the reputation of the brand is the result of many contact moments or so-called touchpoints. By making these more personal, trust grows.

The essence of a business is not what it sells or says it does. It?s the people that work for it, the people that buy and all others in the so-called ecosystem, such as partners and ? in a social and connected reality ? the relationships of their relationships. The personality of a brand is constituted by the personal voices of all people representing and connecting with it.

Four ways to regain trust

Reconnecting your brand means earning attention of people, but most of all it means earning trust. Here are four ways to regain trust as I recently posted them in a guest post for one of our customers.

1. Be clear and transparent

Many organizations can be more transparent than they are today, opening themselves up for interaction and participation. More important than transparency is clarity: what are your intentions and promises when interacting and doing business with people? What can they really expect? The need for clarity applies to numerous domains. Think about handling the personal data of your customers, for instance, and the need of a clear privacy policy. Privacy increasingly becomes something that needs to be earned. However, clarity is also about making the customer experience as transparent and evident as possible: no unexpected surprises and removing everything that stands in the way of people fulfilling their needs. That?s what user-friendliness is about. Finally, clarity is also about your promises. People expect something when entering in a marketing or other business relationship. It?s important to set these expectations right and not overpromise. At the same time, it?s essential to make sure that expectations are clear in order to avoid disappointment.

2. When trust meets conversions: live up to your promises

Once the mutual expectations are set, and people know how you will deal with their data, follow up on their questions or any sort of interaction and transaction, it?s important to live up to these promises and expectations. It?s the basis of trust but also of branding and conversion optimization. In the end, conversions and business transactions only happen when there is a level of trust. Even social sharing and content sharing in general requires trust. For lesser-known brands that is sometimes a challenge, but it doesn?t have to. The other way around, sometimes bigger brands can have trust challenges that smaller competitors don?t have. Using different ways to establish credibility and trust is essential in optimizing conversions. However, the key differentiator is to actually live up to what you promise by using them.

3. Keep the multi-channel lines open

No one is perfect. Living up 200% to promises and proving perfect customer experiences is a goal to strive towards. However, things happen, after all we are human beings. Even if you?re totally clear and do everything you can to live up to your promises, something can go wrong. Your product can be DOA. Someone in your marketing team can make an error, leading to a situation in which the expectations are not met and promises are broken. This is why it?s important to allow people to get in touch with you fast and across the channels they prefer to use. Customer service is about customers and about making sure that the expectations are met. However, it?s also about being there when things do go wrong and even before they can go wrong. Watching over potential errors or unmet promises and, more importantly, talking about them by being attentive, listening to feedback, monitoring, surveying and responding in a?clear and transparent way, is essential to regain trust and reconnect your brand. Good analysis to understand the hurdles and potential problems when interacting with customers and prospects is part of this as well.

4. Nurture the relationship: going beyond trust

Even the happiest and most loyal customer can become upset once you stop paying attention to him. The other way around, there are always people with high buying potential in your list that never become good customers because they are overlooked and don?t receive what they need to go beyond basic trust and become loyal customers or even advocates. Generating revenue is directly related to providing value. In impersonal approaches, whereby a single customer view is lacking; it?s nearly impossible to offer the value, information or simply tools, contacts, interactions and services your customers want. To achieve that single view, integrating customer and marketing data across contact moments is a must, tapping into all your data sources to give you a central 360? customer view. People also want to voice their opinions now and then, so invite them to, for instance, via surveys and other feedback mechanisms. Obviously, developing a relationship in marketing is also about lead nurturing, which is about content, offers, scenarios etc. but most of all about caring, in the end what nurturing means.

These four tips are really not about marketing and business alone. In fact, you could apply them to human relationships in general: talk, listen, be clear, do what you promise, etc? However, in marketing we sometimes forget them or simply don?t have the processes and tools to make it all happen.
