(NASHVILLE, TN), July 25, 2012 ? Local businesses and consumers will get a boost from Tennessee?s Sales Tax Holiday according to Senate Majority Leader Mark Norris (R -Collierville). Norris said the holiday is set to begin on Friday, August 3 at 12:01 a.m. and will continue through the weekend until Sunday, August 5 at 11:59 p.m.
?We have heard from many parents and business owners regarding the success of this sales tax holiday since its implementation seven years ago,? said Leader Norris, who is a member of the Senate Finance Committee and was a key supporter the measure. ?During times of economic downturn, it is even more important to stimulate sales to local businesses, while providing citizens sales tax relief.?
During the holiday, clothing with a purchase price of $100 or less per item is exempt from sales tax. School supplies exempted include items of $100 or less like binders, book bags, calculators, tape, chalk, crayons, erasers, folders, glue, pens, pencils, lunch boxes, notebooks, paper, ruler, and scissors. Additionally, there is no requirement that purchases be made only for students. If an item is tax exempt, anyone may make the purchase tax?free.
Computers with a purchase price of $1,500 or less, not for use in a trade or business, are also exempt from tax. Laptop computers, if priced at $1,500 or less, qualify as well as tablet computers.
Norris sponsored the constitutional amendment to enact property tax freezes for senior citizens by Tennessee municipalities. He also sponsored new laws approved by the General Assembly this year to reduce the food tax from 5.5 to 5.25 percent, phase out the state?s death tax and eliminate the gift tax. He was a key supporter of legislation providing Hall tax relief for senior citizens approved last year.
?We are finally seeing progress in providing some tax relief to our citizens,? said Leader Norris. ?We will continue these efforts in the next General Assembly.?
