Union sophomore defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere suffered an upper-body injury during the Philadelphia Flyers prospects camp scrimmage Saturday at the Virtua Center Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees, N.J.
Gostisbehere, the Flyers? third-round selection in the NHL draft last month, was hurt in the first period. He was drilled into the glass near the bench by center Scott Laughton, who was picked in the first round.
Gostisbehere left the ice and didn't return. His status for today's scrimmage, which will conclude the prospects camp, is unknown.
Union coach Rick Bennett spoke with Gostisbehere late Saturday afternoon.
"I'm happy to report that he knows both of his nicknames, 'Ghost' and 'Ghostbusters,'?" Bennett said. "He's on the up and up. I?m no doctor, so I don't know the extent of his upper-body injury, but he's fine. He seemed in great spirits."
Gostisbehere, who was unavailable for comment, had five goals and 17 assists in 41 games last season. He was named to the ECAC Hockey All-Rookie team, and made the ECACH All-Tournament team as the Dutchmen won their first conference tournament title in march.
Next month, Gostisbehere will be in Lake Placid for the U.S. National Development Camp, which will help determine the team that will participate in the World Junior Championships Dec. 26-Jan. 5 in Ufa, Russia.
"If you play this game, you're going to get banged up at some point," Bennett said. "The only positive I get out of this is that it was in the summer."
