Former Kirkland resident and Issaquah High grad takes silver at London Olympics

The third time was the charm for Jennie Reed.

The former Kirkland and Issaquah resident won a silver medal at the London Olympics Saturday, as part of the United States women?s cycling team.

Reed, 34, and the U.S. women's track cyclists finished behind Great Britain, which beat its own world record (3:14.051), during the team pursuit cycling event at the Olympic velodrome.

Reed, who is an Issaquah High School and University of Washington graduate, took part in the semifinal and preliminary rounds of the event. She watched on as her teammates Sarah Hammer, Dotsie Bausch and Lauren Tamayo?finished off the event with a time of 3:19.727. Canada finished third to take home the bronze.

Reed took up women?s cycling at the Marymoor Velodrome in Redmond and currently lives in Long Beach Calif. She is a 15-time national champion.

Reed finished 10^th in the sprints of the 2004 Athens. She spent the next four years racing at the U.S. Nationals, and various World Cup events, posting top three finishes in many of the events. She finished seventh in the same event during the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Reed called her performance in China disappointing and then took a year off.
